Do You Know What Your Drivetrain Needs to Keep Running?
What Does Driveline Service Mean?
When people think about car maintenance, a few common things spring to front-of-mind, like oil changes and tire rotations. But there are so many components and systems that lie behind the scenes that are just as important and don’t always get the attention they require. One such system is the driveline, or drivetrain—both terms can be used interchangeably. The drivetrain is basically any component that involves transmitting the power created by the engine to the wheels. A generic outline of a drivetrain includes a vehicle’s axles, driveshaft, wheels, joints, differentials and transmission. Let’s take a closer look at what driveline service really means.

Drivetrain Inspection Points
There is a fair bit of ground to cover in terms of what is included in a driveline inspection. The main points come with checking the condition of the fluid contained in the front or rear differentials, as well as in the transfer case — if one is equipped. To be sure, the fluids used to lubricate and dissipate heat generated by the differentials and transfer case are designed to last for a long time. In fact, it’s possible for a vehicle to go through multiple owners before the driveline needs attention.Â
If the differential or transfer case fluids need to be changed, our team will perform a flush that cleans out any unwanted build-up and prepares the system for fresh fluid.
How Do You Know If Your Drivetrain Needs Service?
It is very unlikely that a drivetrain will catastrophically fail without warning. A drivetrain that needs some expert attention will demonstrate a few telltale symptoms that are nearly unmissable. Ignoring these signs could lead to costly repair bills. These signs include:
- Unusual noises – Clunking, grinding, whining, or squealing
- Vibrations – Shuddering while accelerating
- Difficulty shifting gears – Especially delayed or hard shifts with an automatic
- Fluid leaks – Red or brown fluid found under the vehicle
