To be sure, automotive batteries last longer and are more robust than ever before. But that doesn’t mean they last forever or that they are invulnerable to extreme conditions. Performance Signs a Car Battery Needs Replacement

Everything in an automobile starts with the battery, both literally and figuratively. Without a working battery, no vehicle is able to go anywhere. In terms of performance, a struggling battery will show drivers a few important signs. Some of the most common dying battery symptoms include:

  • Slow Engine Crank – Engine struggles to start under normal conditions.
  • Clicking or Grinding Sounds – A rapid clicking or buzzing sound when the ignition is engaged.
  • Dim or Flickering Lights – Headlights, interior lights and dashboard lights appear dimmer than normal.
  • Electrical Symptoms – Power accessories like windows or radio work slowly or not at all.
  • Engine Shuts Off – The engine turns over but shuts down immediately after.

Physical Signs a Battery Should Be Replaced

Batteries are a physical object and there are a few important signs of damage or wear that require almost immediate attention. If the battery’s case is swollen or misshapen, it needs to be replaced as quickly as possible. Also, if you’ve been using the same battery for more than three years, it’s almost certainly time for a replacement. Other physical signs include:

  • Dashboard warning lights
  • Noticeable corrosion on the terminals
  • A pungent sulfur smell could be a potential acid leak
