Summer Tires vs. Winter Tires

Broadly speaking, tires have advanced incredibly far in the last several years. While modern tires are still made of rubber. The type of material and processes that separate winter and summer tires is the secret to their seasonal performance.

How do Summer Tires work?

A good set of summer tires is designed to provide traction and stability on warm roads as well as in rainy conditions by directing water away from the treads. It takes a special rubber formulation to do this.

How do Winter Tires work?

The key to winter tires is that the rubber needs to stay soft and pliant in the coldest conditions. Staying soft in the cold allows the tires to have an adequate amount of tread in contact with the ground.

When Should Winter Tires Be Installed?

While there is a law in place in British Columbia that dictates when winter tires should be installed, a lot of other people follow the 7°C rule. When the average ambient temperature is below that point, it’s time to put the winter tires on the vehicle. When it’s Spring or Summer, and the average outside temperature is above 7°C, you can put the more efficient summer tires on your car, truck, or SUV.
